Summer styling II

Last year I wrote a post called Summer Styling that featured beautiful photos of the way my mum and I decorated our holiday house. This year we’ve done it again, a little differently though. We love entertaining visitors throughout Summer. Our 3 meter Jardan dining table is one of my absolute favourite pieces of furniture in our home. We had so many fun and crazy dinner parties around it! It’s a pity it’s been covered up with a table cloth in this photo, but click here if you’d like to see it naked 😉

Scented pink garden roses locally grown in Main Ridge. They smell and look unreal!

There’s a bit of an animal theme going on in our home.. A bit? I mean a lot! These bunnies keep multiplying! Mum, please stop collecting bunnies! We’re also obsessed with Flinders Farm tomatoes. You can see we buy them on mass!

I love cooking while I’m here. There’s always a babysitter around to watch little miss Cherry so there’s plenty of time to indulge in some creativity in the kitchen!

More bunnies and more beautiful locally gown flowers, Dahlias. Painting by Turbo Brown.

One of my favourite artworks in our home, The Wanderer, photography by Polixeni Papapetrou. This House of Orange side table is our latest edition of furniture. You like?

Happy new year to everyone! I hope you’ve all had a fabulous holiday break and are enjoying the glorious sunny weather. Cherry and me, and the family are staying up at our holiday house down by the seaside. We even brought our pussy cat Meinekki with us. My computer and camera are all set up for some January blogging, so stay tuned for weekly posts!

Gingerbread cookies

I’ve been busy in the kitchen today baking gingerbread cookies for our family Chrismukkah lunch tomorrow!

This is how I made them! (Recipe from www.taste.com.au )Ingredients:

  • Melted butter, to grease
  • 125g butter, at room temperature
  • 100g (1/2 cup, firmly packed) brown sugar
  • 125ml (1/2 cup) golden syrup
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 375g (2 1/2 cups) plain flour
  • 1 tbs ground ginger
  • 1 tsp mixed spice
  • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
  • Plain flour, to dust
  • 150g (1 cup) pure icing sugar, sifted
  • liquid food colouring
  • Smarties and Hundreds & Thousands to decorate

Method:

Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush 2 baking trays with melted butter to lightly grease. Use an electric beater to beat the butter and sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the golden syrup and egg yolk and beat until combined. Stir in the flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarbonate of soda. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth. Press dough into a disc. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for 30 minutes to rest.

Place the dough between 2 sheets of baking paper and roll out until about 4mm thick. Use a 9cm gingerbread man cutter to cut out shapes. Place on trays about 3cm apart. Repeat with any excess dough.

Bake in oven for 10 minutes or until brown. Remove from oven. Transfer to a rack to cool.

Meanwhile, place egg white in a clean, dry bowl. Use an electric beater to beat until soft peaks form. Gradually add icing sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Divide icing among several bowls and add liquid colouring to create desired colours. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge.

Place prepared icings in small plastic bags. Cut a small hole in a corner of each bag. Pipe icing over gingerbread men to decorate. Finish with Smarties and Hundreds & Thousands.

Cherry and me love heart cookies
