Welcome to NY – A night out in Times Square

My husband and I arrived back from an amazing 2 week trip to the USA just a few nights ago. Our little miss Cherry stayed in Melbourne with her adoring grandparents. We missed her incredibly but knew she was having an absolute ball back home and getting spoilt rotten.

A night out in Times Square…One of my ‘must do’s’ on the NY list was to taste a good ol’ Texas Barbecue. A few locals recommended we try Justin Timberlake’s joint, Southern Hospitality near Times Square.

Out the front of Southern Hospitality

First up, we tasted deep-fryed pickles! Yes you heard me correctly… Pickles! They were incredible! Crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle.

This is me getting creative while we waited for our main course.

A king-sized serve of Memphis-Style dry rubbed ribs and baby back ribs, served with a side of haystack onion strings and classic macaroni and cheese. A heart attack on a plate!

Then we dropped in to Schmackary’s, an old fashioned cookie store for an after dinner treat

OMG YUM!

A cookie each and a vanilla milkshake to share

I ate: Peanut butter cookie with semi-sweet chocolate, roasted peanuts and sea salt,
He ate: Sch’mores with graham cracker base, semi sweet chocolate, topped with toasted marshmallow

We needed a long walk after our massive meal so we took a stroll down Times Square. Then we stopped to watch these talented guys spray painting New York city-scapes

What a great night out!

The Pumpkin Harvest

Back late last year, I bought a little punnet of Queensland Blue pumpkin seedlings with three tiny shoots, about 4cm tall. I planted the shoots in my flower-beds, under the rosemary shrubs. I’d forgotten about the plants as Cherry, me and the family headed to our beach house for the Summer. It wasn’t until Cherry’s Daddy checked in on our Melbourne home, to collect the mail and water the garden, when he called me in shock to say “the pumpkins have taken over the garden!” After just a few weeks, the tiny pumpkin seedlings had grown into gigantic monster creepers, swallowing our entire lawn! I asked him to send me some pics as I was in disbelief. This was the start of our 2012 Pumpkin Harvest!

Mid Autumn we harvested 12 big fat beauties!

Elle’s Winter Pumpkin Soup
Without ‘Mr Muscles’ around to help chop up the pumpkin, I baked the enter thing, skin, stalk, seeds and all, in a medium oven for 2 hours.
 Before

After

After it cooled down the skin was really easy to remove. I separated the flesh and seeds.

I then placed the remaining orange flesh in a large pot, poured in 1L of stock, added some cinnamon, salt and pepper and brought it to the boil.

Then I blitzed with my Bar-Mix and served with a dollop of plain yogurt. Hey presto, Elle’s Winter Pumpkin Soup is served!

Don’t forget the seeds make a delicious snack too!

Lay the pumpkin seeds on baking tray and dry roast them in a medium oven until crisp

Our manicured Sir Walter Lawn is still recovering from the pumpkin stampede but it was well worth it! It’s bulb season now and Cherry and Me are watching our Daffodils and Tulips pop up everywhere. We adore our little inner city garden and can’t wait for the next crop!

Cherry’s Chooks

Some of my fondest childhood memories were in the garden, planting and picking flowers, building tree houses and caring for our pet chickens. Ever since we moved into our new home, a year and a half ago, I’ve been dying to recreate some nostalgia by adopting a couple of pet chooks to live and rome freely in our backyard!

Meet Cherry’s chooks: ‘Mrs Schnitzel’ and ‘Bella Russ’ (named after the city Belarus)

Cherry, 9 months

These fuzzy chooks are called ‘Silkies’. I just adore their fluffy bellbottoms and Russian hats!

Me with Bella Russ

Silkies have a very gentle nature. The more you handle them, the friendlier they become.

Cherry’s chooks wandering inside. Very cute until they pooped on the floor!

Mrs Schintzel and Bella Russ only stayed with us for 3 months. It turns out, keeping chickens in a small, tidy, inner-city courtyard isn’t as glamorous as it sounds.  The girls now live at a preschool veggie garden keeping all the little kiddies happy. We hope to one day adopt new chickens when we have a bigger yard with room for a proper chicken coop!

Cherry and Me visit the snow

Last week, we took Cherry to the snow for the very first time! We loved being up at Falls Creek and we can’t wait to go again, next season when she’ll be big enough for her first skiing lesson!Cherry and Me

Our snowman

She looooved the snow!

Most days were extremely foggy and you could hardly see 50 metres ahead

And of course the sun came out the day we left!
