High Tea with Cherry and Me

Last Sunday we were invited along to sample Egg Unlimited’s new high tea menu, just in time for Mothers Day. The party was held in owner, Julie’s beautiful Victorian home. Her tall corridors were decorated with an art collection, curated by Melbourne art dealer, Paul Auckett. The paintings included works by Australian artists like Brett Whiteley, Norman Lindsay, Bill Henson, Ricky Swallow, Jasper Knight and 2012 Archibald winner, Tim Storrier.

Finders Keepers

Last Saturday, my friend and fellow blogger, Lauren and I explored The Finders Keepers Market held at the Royal Melbourne Exhibition Buildings, Carlton. Can you believe I left my trusty camera at home on the kitchen bench! I was kicking myself but luckily my iPhone has a terrific camera so I worked with the situation to bring you some of the best things we saw.

I love collecting vintage floral miss-matched plates. My collection started when I moved out of home and ‘borrowed’ my mothers dishes 😉  Aren’t these illustrated saucers just divine! I bought one that says “every bunny needs some bunny”.

So very sweet!

Love these illustrations

I thought the set up of this stall was just so cute!

Old school suitcases and leather handbags with built-in retro stereos. Just plug in your iphone! Brilliant!

Letterpress greeting cards, coloured twine and beautifully printed wrapping paper.

Great inspiration!

Do you think Cherry needs another vintage fabric dress?

Cute but a little scary!

Paint your own Babushka Doll

One of the best stalls we spotted were these hand casted porcelain vessels. They were grouped by colour and looked absolutely stunning! Lauren bought a couple and this is what she did with them when she got home:

Our Seder Table

Passover this year was extra special as it fell over the Easter long weekend. We decided it would be fun to all go up to our holiday house and celebrate, country style, with a touch of bunnies and chocolate!A Seder is special dinner held over the first two nights of Passover. We read from a Hebrew/English book, the story of Passover and commemorate how the Jews were once slaves in Egypt, building the Pyramids. Our Seder is the ‘cut-down’ super fast and fun version! We cover the basics, sings songs, and most importantly, eat!

Easter bunnies and Matzah. Matzah is traditional Passover un-leavened bread. We eat it to commemorate what the Jewish people ate as they were escaping Egypt. They didn’t have time from the dough to rise, so they baked it quickly into a flat, crisp bread.

Locally grown Dahlias. One of my absolute favourite flowers!

Olive branches picked from our front garden at the holiday house

Cherry’s first Passover!

The table is set! Gefilte-fish for entrée, a very traditional Jewish dish. It’s basically a fish ball with a slice of carrot on top. We also ate Chicken Soup with Matzah-balls which I blogged about last week.

Cherry’s daddy reading from the Haggadah.

I’ve linked some of the Hebrew words to Wikipedia for a more thorough explanation.

Matzah-ball Madness!

Every year, around now, my family and I celebrate the Jewish festival of Passover, or as we call it, Pesach. This year, Pesach was extra special as it fell on the Easter long weekend. We all thought it would be great to break away from tradition and celebrate Pesach up at our holiday house. Usually my mum makes the classic ‘chicken soup with matzah-ball’ dish, but this year I took on the challenge and thought I’d share our family recipe with you.

The Chicken Soup
Chicken soup is the most popular traditional Jewish household meal. Some even call it ‘Jewish Penicillin’ as it’s thought to be a natural remedy for the common cold. Every family recipe varies slightly and that’s what makes chicken soup so special. This is how my mum was taught by her mum and one day I hope to teach my little Cherry! This is what you’ll need:
1 free range chicken cut into small pieces, skin removed
6 free range chicken drumsticks, skin removed
1 celary
8 small carrots, or 4 large
2 parsnips
1 brown onion
1 bunch dill
1 bunch flat leaf parsley
table salt

Place the chicken in a large pot, cover with tap water and bring to the boil. Turn the flame down and gently simmer the water for about 20 minutes. You’ll notice a skin of foam forming on the surface. Remove and discard the foam.

While the pot is simmering away, chop the carrots, celery and parsnips into large chunks. Throw them into to the pot and add the peeled onion too. Add salt to taste and let it gently simmer for about 2 hours. My tip: It’s best to cook this soup slowly on a low flame to allow all the flavours to combine. This way the chicken will be soft, tender and falling off the bone.

Just before you serve the soup, throw in the parsley and dill, roughly chopped. Yum! Now for the Matzah-ball!

Matzah-balls
You will need:
10 free range eggs
2 packs of Matzo Meal, 750g
2 brown onions
table salt

Get someone else to dice the onions. Nobody likes cutting onions but my dad doesn’t seem to mind. Then, add a good glug of vegetable oil into a fry pan and slowly cook the onions until they caramelise. This might take a while but is totally worth it for the sweetest balls!

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs, add the Matzo Meal, cooked onions and half a table spoon of salt. Add about 2 to 3 cups of tap water until you get a nice sticky consistency for rolling your balls.

Roll out the mixture into balls, the size is totally up to you, but make sure they all look the same. Mum’s wearing gloves to protect her precious nails, but my tip is to wet your hands with cold water so the mixture doesn’t stick.

Boil the balls in a large pot of salted water for about an hour. Now you’re done! Serve up a bowl of chicken soup with a couple of matzah-balls and you’ll have yourself a traditional, hearty and delicious meal!

Cherry’s loves her mummy’s matzah-ball and chicken soup purée!

Last weekend at the Richmond Weekender

Last weekend, we visited The Richmond Weekender, Homemaker Market and Canteen, at the old Channel 9 studios, before being demolished and converted into new apartments. It was astonishing how they transformed the spooky vacant building into a super trendy design hub with temporary structures, built with raw and recycled materials. Very cool!

The Design Market

The coolest way to wrap hot cross buns!

Designer scissors and cute stationary

Plants for sale

Welcome to the Canteen

We were drawn to the smoking BBQ!

What we ate: Smoky BBQ rib and brisket with coleslaw, washed down with Mountain Goat Ale. The perfect Sunday breakfast.

Love that hessian wall hanging garden. Such a cool idea!

We visited TRW on the last day as it only popped-up during March. I love Melbourne!
